No one can get inner peace by pouncing on it.

Hi guys. I really wanted to do a Beck post for you today, but Future Hubby came home from work around noon and that threw a wrench into my plans for the day. He is feeling better, thankfully, but since his job is so physical, he wasn’t ready for a full day back.
Instead, I want to draw your eyes to a blog you might already be familiar with: Heather Eats Almond Butter. Over the last week or so she has been posting about how much better she feels now that she is eating animal fat again.
Here is an excerpt from today’s post:
Animal Fat. Back in November, I tried upping my protein and lowering my carb intake hoping that would help with my hormone imbalances. Eating a bunch of lean protein did nothing for me except pack on a few pounds, but switching to a diet higher in fat has helped. Now, I love my nut butter and chia seeds, but I’m not talking about them. I’m talking about animal fat. Butter, heavy cream, whole eggs, salmon, grass fed beef, etc. is what I reach for now, and it’s helping. I’m not sure if it’s all the monounsaturated fat or the higher concentration of Omega 3’s or what, but I’ll take it. Honestly, I get lost in some of the science, but this way of eating has worked better for me than anything else I’ve tried in the past.
And then she said this Sunday:
I’ve mentioned it before, but I don’t fear saturated fats. In fact, ever since I’ve added more of it into my diet, I’ve seen nothing but improvements. My hair texture has improved, my skin is so much softer, I’ve dropped a few pounds, and my good cholesterol numbers went up. I was having coffee with a friend on Friday morning, and she requested full fat cream cheese for her bagel. I started gushing about my new found obsession for everything full fat, and she just said matter-of-factly, Oh, you mean how nature intended us to eat? I think she hit the nail on the head. Don’t you think our ancestors would be laughing at us skimming the fat off everything, usually replacing it with sugar or salt. So silly my friends. Again, our bodies need fat. Yes, there are some “bad” fats out there. We definitely need to stay away from trans fats, but if you eat the way nature intended you to eat, you shouldn’t have a problem avoiding them since trans fats are found in packaged foods. I’m also not a huge fan of vegetable and some seed oils. You can read why here. I challenge all of you to add more fat into your diet. Eat the egg yolk. Add unrefined coconut oil to your next smoothie. Stir-fry your vegetables in butter or ghee, and take notice at the changes in your body. I think you may be surprised.
Isn’t that great?
Of course, my mind always goes to, but she’s ALREADY in shape and thin, so she can do things I can’t do. What do you guys think? Does someone have to choose to be fat-free to lose weight and only THEN eat this way?
Future Hubby sure thinks that way sometimes and I don’t think he’s alone. He sees the commercials for The Central Ohio Nutrition Center and says, why don’t you go on their diets (which are liquid, by the way), lose all of the weight, and THEN learn how to control everything. I don’t know, I just can’t see that working. I mean, heck, if Oprah can’t make it work, what are MY chances? (And I say that as she is someone who can afford a personal chef, trainer, her own gym, liposuction, piranhas to eat off some of her fat, etc.) ![]()
Today I sort of honored my raw commitment by blanching some asparagus for lunch. I had two cups. Then FH made more for dinner. All told, I had three cups of asparagus today.
I did eat some leftovers today. I wanted to answer a question about the leftover sitch in our house: We have one refrigerator (and it’s not huge, as it’s freezer on top, fridge on the bottom.). Then I convinced FH to buy a separate freezer. To be fair, we don’t have a lot of room for one so we had to go on the small side. It holds about 125 lbs of food. And both freezers are FULL. To the gills, practically. We order a lot of food from Omaha Steaks, plus FH likes to make sure that we’re well-stocked for any possible situation. So we usually don’t have any room at all for leftovers in the freezers. Basically I have my waffles that I eat, then restock. Or we might have some lasagnas that we eat and then restock.
What I want to do is have an inventory so that we can see what we have. FH has a set grocery list that he buys at Kroger every Friday, whether it’s necessary or not. I try to temper it a bit, as he often ends up throwing out loaves of bread (only he eats it) or containers of milk (only he drinks it). It’s a work in progress.
Okay, on to the eats for today:

Some successes, some failures. Some friends become enemies, some enemies become friends? At the end your main character is richer from the experience? Yeah? Yeah? (Sorry, got off on a tangent of my favorite Stewie quote.)
Anyway, we’re still pretty much snowed in here. Hopefully tomorrow will bring a day out of the house. Hope you’re all having a good week!

I wasn’t always thin and in shape, and eating a low fat diet never got me anywhere! Fat is the one macronutrient that helped me to lose the weight, and it helps me keep it off. Fat is and will always be my friend, but sugar? Never!
Thanks for the shout-outs. I so hope my posts help others out there. Do not fear the fats my friends. Here is a post that was a total eye opener for me. You might appreciate it as well: http://www.paleonu.com/panu-weblog/2009/8/27/how-to-lose-weight.html
I grabbed it back!! Sorry about that – I’ve been trying to block Hoodia from grabbing my posts and something must have triggered it.
Thank you so much for commenting!
I am really enjoying your blog. I am so glad to see someone else agree that whole foods are best and that fat can’t be the enemy. I read a lot of Michael Pollan’s books and he makes the same case.
Check your spam folder…I think my last comment just got spammed. Silly WordPress.
I love fat! Which we’ve talked about before and I’ve always embraced healthy fats from day one. I ate fat when I was losing weight and still eat fat now that I’m in maintenance mode. Heather is right, we need it for our skin and hair to keep them soft and shiny. We need it for our bodies because our bodies have been processing fat from the beginning. Going fat free is ridiculous. Going healthy fat is ideal. I do eat butter still but that has been cut down to just a touch here and there. I still cook with it on occasion but mix it with olive oil to get a higher smoke point but still have the taste of butter.
“FH has a set grocery list that he buys at Kroger every Friday, whether it’s necessary or not. ” Girl you just made my head explode! OH FH! He needs a food intervention. LOL
I know, he is completely silly in his shopping ways. We have enough food to last a year. He buys extra canned food each trip and we have MREs and other dried foods in case the you know what hits the fan. On top of that is all of the stuff that he buys every week, so that we are bursting at the seams with food. On the one hand, I feel lucky to be able to have so much. But on the other, we throw away a lot of fresh stuff. Together, we spend about $350 per week on groceries. Much of mine is eaten within the week.
Fat is not the enemy…the kind of fat is what is important. Your monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are BEST (the kinds from nuts, avacados, salmon, nut butters, etc.) Those types of fats actually aid in cleaning out your arteries and making things run smooth interanally. The saturated and trans fat are the scary ones! Those are the artery clogging fats that are wreak havock on our bodies! So many people think that no-fat is the answer. But really your body needs fats and when you elimate it you tend to indulge in over-processed crap food that is doing nothing for you!! Sorry for the rant….
It’s not a rant if I agree with you, and I always agree with you Miss Kelly!!
